Car Rental Meets Boat Trip on the Bay

Drive the bay road to Perast, take a water taxi to Our Lady of the Rocks, and discover corners of the Bay of Kotor that tour buses never reach.

Why a Car and Boat Belong Together Here

The Bay of Kotor is shaped like a butterfly — two wide wings of water connected by the narrow Verige strait. Tour buses follow the main road and stop at the obvious viewpoints. But the bay's real character sits in the places between those stops: the stone jetties where fishermen mend nets at dawn, the roadside konobas that serve whatever came out of the water that morning, the tiny beaches tucked under fig trees with no sign pointing to them.

A rental car gives you the road. A boat gives you the water. Together they unlock the full bay in a single day — something no organised excursion manages to do.

Our Lady of the Rocks

The island sits 115 metres off the Perast waterfront. It is artificial — built over centuries by local sailors who dropped a rock into the water each time they returned safely from a voyage. The church on top dates from 1630 and houses a collection of silver votive tablets and a canvas by Tripo Kokolja that covers the entire ceiling. Water taxis shuttle passengers across from the Perast quay every 15 minutes and the round trip costs €5 per person. Allow 30–40 minutes on the island.

Exploring Perast by Car

Perast is 12 km north-west of Kotor along the bay road. Park in the free lot at the northern entrance to town — the waterfront road is pedestrianised in summer. Walk south along the promenade past 16 former palaces, most of them Venetian-era stone mansions now crumbling elegantly into the bay. The Bujović Palace houses a small maritime museum. At the far end, the bell tower of St. Nicholas offers the best elevated view of both islands.

Combining with the Blue Cave

From Perast, drive back through Kotor and continue south around the bay to the Luštica peninsula. At Zanjice beach, speedboat operators run trips to the Blue Cave — a sea grotto where refracted sunlight turns the water electric blue. The cave visit takes 30 minutes; the boat ride is part of the experience. This is a full-day extension that works best if you leave Kotor early.

Suggested Day Itinerary

  • 08:30 – Drive from Kotor to Perast (20 min). Park, walk the waterfront, take the water taxi to Our Lady of the Rocks.
  • 11:00 – Coffee on the Perast promenade. Browse the maritime museum if open.
  • 12:30 – Lunch at a waterfront konoba in Perast — grilled squid, black risotto, and local white wine from the Crmnica valley.
  • 14:30 – Drive back via the bay road, stopping at viewpoints above Dobrota. Return the car or continue to Risan or the Verige strait.

Parking Along the Bay

Free parking is available at the northern edge of Perast, at the Risan waterfront, and at several unmarked pull-offs along the bay road between Kotor and Perast. In July and August the Perast lot fills by 10am — arrive early or park in Dobrota and drive the last 5 km after the morning rush clears.
