Driving south from Kotor to Ulcinj
Ulcinj is Montenegro's southernmost town — a coastal Ottoman-built old town flanked by the longest sandy beach in the eastern Adriatic. From Kotor it's around 2.5 hours along the coastal road through Budva, Petrovac and Bar, then a final stretch through olive groves to the Albanian border.
Most Kotor visitors don't make it this far south, which is part of the appeal. Velika Plaža and Ada Bojana feel completely different from the Bay — flat, sandy, summer-only, and culturally distinct (Albanian-majority town with a heavy Ottoman footprint).
Why drive from Kotor instead of using buses
The Kotor to Ulcinj bus exists but routes through Bar with at least one transfer — five hours minimum. With a rental you do it in 2.5 hours each way, and crucially you can reach Ada Bojana and Valdanos Bay which the buses don't serve at all.
Picking up your car
Collect at Tivat Airport on arrival, or in Kotor town the morning of the trip. The southbound coastal road E65 starts at the Bay road exit, runs the full Budva riviera, then continues past Bar before turning inland for the Ulcinj approach.
Best fleet pick for the south coast
The road is well-paved up to Bar and gets thinner from there — a Polo or 208 is fine for the main route, but for the dirt track to Ada Bojana you'll want extra clearance. A Kadjar or Stonic handles both. Browse the full fleet.
Beaches around Ulcinj
Ulcinj has the most varied beach geography on Montenegro's coast:
- Velika Plaža: Velika Plaža (Big Beach) — 12 km of fine sand running east from town to the Bojana river. Wind-flat, kitesurf central, sun loungers and bars in summer.
- Ada Bojana: Ada Bojana — river-mouth island where the Bojana flows into the sea. Naturist-friendly traditionally, sandy on three sides, accessed by a single bridge.
- Mala Plaža: Mala Plaža (Small Beach) — town beach below the old town walls, sandy and shallow, packed in July.
- Valdanos: Valdanos Bay — pebble cove 6 km north of town, ringed by 10,000 olive trees, much quieter than the sandy stretches.
What to see in Ulcinj
The fortified old town climbs the headland between Mala Plaža and the marina — Ottoman walls, narrow lanes, the Balšić tower museum and the renovated mosque. The Old Olive Tree at Mirovica (over 2,000 years) and the Saš Fortress ruins inland round out the heritage stops.
Driving conditions Kotor to Ulcinj
Coastal road the whole way, two-lane and bendy. Heavy traffic in July when Ulcinj fills with Albanian and Kosovan visitors crossing the border for the beach. Parking inside the old town is impossible — use the lot at the western entrance, walk in.

Velika Plaža and the Bojana river mouth — 12 km east, the sandy stretch and the river's eel restaurants on stilts.
Lake Skadar southern shore — 25 km north, Murići beach and the Vranjina causeway.

Ulcinj trip FAQ
Can I cross into Albania with my rental?
Yes if your rental agreement includes Albania in the cross-border tier. Most cluster vendors include it in the upper tier — check at booking. The Sukobin crossing is the closest, 8 km from town.
Is Ulcinj a feasible day trip from Kotor or do I need an overnight?
Doable as a long day (5 hours of driving plus sightseeing), but tight. If you want time for both Velika Plaža and the old town walk, an overnight makes more sense.
Is Ada Bojana actually naturist?
Traditionally yes, though enforcement varies. The eastern half of the island is signed naturist; the western near the bridge is mixed.
