Car Hire in Nikšić from Kotor

Montenegro's mountain-fringed brewery town, the inland gateway to Durmitor

Driving inland from Kotor to Nikšić

Nikšić is Montenegro's second city — a working town in the karst plain northwest of Podgorica, ringed by Krupac, Slano and Vrtac lakes. From Kotor it's around 90 minutes via Cetinje and the Lovćen-pass road, or two hours along the longer inland highway through Podgorica.

It's not on most coastal itineraries, but if you're heading further inland to Durmitor or the Tara canyon, Nikšić makes a logical halfway stop. The brewery (Trebjesa) tap room and the lakes are reasons to linger.

Why a rental from Kotor is the right call

There's no direct bus from Kotor to Nikšić — the routing is Kotor to Podgorica to Nikšić, three transfers and most of a day. With a rental you take the scenic Cetinje route via the Lovćen serpentines, eat lunch at Krupac lake, and continue north into Durmitor without having to plan around bus timetables.

Picking up your car

Collect at Tivat Airport on arrival, or in Kotor town the morning of the trip. From Kotor go up the Lovćen serpentines (the 25 hairpins above Kotor) toward Cetinje, then continue inland on the M2 toward Nikšić.

Best fleet pick for inland driving

The Lovćen pass is paved but steep and tight — a Yaris, Polo or 208 handles it best. If you're pushing on to Durmitor, the Megane or Kadjar give you better cruising at altitude on the inland straights. See models and prices on the fleet page.

What to see in Nikšić

King Nikola's Palace and the Holy Basil cathedral on Trg Slobode. The Trebjesa brewery (the local Nikšićko pivo brewery) runs limited tours, and the old fortress on Trebjesa hill gives the best town view. Bedem fortress remnants are a 10-minute walk west of the centre.

The Nikšić lakes

Three artificial lakes — Krupac, Slano, Vrtac — surround the town. Krupac is the most accessible, with a small beach, café and footpath circuit; locals swim there in summer. Slano has the better sunset over the bare karst hills. All are within a 15-minute drive of the centre.

Driving conditions

The Cetinje route is the scenic one but the 25 serpentines above Kotor are slow — count on 90 minutes total. The longer route via Podgorica on the M-2 is faster (2 hours flat) and is the road you want when you're carrying more luggage. Fuel up in Cetinje on the way north — the inland section between Cetinje and Nikšić has limited stations.

Nikšić trip FAQ

Is Nikšić worth a stop on a Montenegro tour?

Worth it as a halfway base if you're heading to Durmitor or the Tara canyon from the coast. Skip it if you're staying coastal.

Can I take a small rental on the road to Durmitor?

Yes, the M-18 to Žabljak is paved the whole way. The serpentine bit through Šavnik is tight in places but any car handles it. Snow chains required in winter — vendors include them in the winter pack.

What time does the Trebjesa brewery open for tours?

Tours run irregular hours — book in advance via the Nikšićko pivo website. Walk-ins usually disappointed.
